REEF@UD Tackles Coastal Resilience at Eco Entrepreneurship Design Sprint

As a content writing intern for the Horn Entrepreneurship program, this sample is an event recap for our blog. I attended the REEF program’s Eco Entrepreneurship Design Sprint where the participants conceptualized solutions to environmental issues such as coastal resilience. I observed as a fly on the wall and took notes on the structure, main points, and quotes from the event. Similar to all my articles, I pinpointed the key points of my notes to start writing up the draft. For an event recap, I had to continuously think about including all crucial details to the experience while still being concise about what is said. I typically practice the skill of summarizing and abridging with articles like these. This article was well received by members of the Horn community along with the REEF community for shining a light on the event and the talented participants and faculty.

Burn Social:

Innovation in Three Dimensions

Another type of article I got to write in my content writing internship for Horn Entrepreneurship is profile articles. Typically about student and alumni entrepreneurial ventures. This specific article was a profile all about UD alum Richard Hayburn and his product design startup, Burn Social. I started off researching about Richard, his work, and the subject of product design to later draft some notes. Including what I know and what I want to learn. I reached out to him to introduced myself and set up some time to speak. Richard was happy to share and answer anything I wanted to know. After reviewing my notes and feedback from Richard, I was able to find the essential points to paint the right story to properly inform the audience and satisfy Richard. Since Richard gave me such good information I decided to format the rest of the article as a simple Q&A rather than sprinkling his quotes here and there. I made an effort to keep the same optimistic and imaginative tone that Richard also makes an effort to display everyday personally and professionally.

Power of a Writer: Nora Kelly Lee

This feature article was written as an assignment for my "News Writing and Editing"class. This was our big and final story for the semester and our last chance to put all our acquired knowledge to use. We were always encouraged to check out UD's speaker series events for an article and this time I did. I attend an event featuring contributing writer for The Atlantic, Nora Kelly Lee. After listening to her story, opinions, and advice I decided to make the focus of my article on the power and influence writers hold in society. A topic both Nora and I resonated with. I interviewed a number of different types of people to give me their perspective of the topic and event to use as quotes. From the notes about Nora I took during the event, the insight learned from multiples sources, and research done online about a similar topic, I was able to compose a story that recites this event for what it was on the surface and add more depth to open a conversation.
